Here are some selected books you might like to read before going to this fascinating part of undiscovered Tuscany.

A Tuscan Childhood by Kinta Beevor

A story of the Bohemian life by the author and her family in the Fortezza della Brunella near Aulla. Starts in 1916 through the second world war and gives a good description of life in the Lunigiana in that period, especially the contadina system, before it all changed after World War II. A veritable who's who of British life in Tuscany in the early 20th century. Illustrated with black and white pictures.

Love and War in the Apeninnes by Eric Newby

Eric Newby escapes through a hospital window to become a POW on the run in Italy in 1943. Helped by the Lunigiana's farmers, he survives.

A small Place in Italy by Eric Newby

Eric Newby buys and rennovates a crumbling farmhouse in the Lunigiana called "I Castagni" (The Chestnuts) with the help of the local population.

When asked what was his favorite walk ever, Newby chose a walk he had written about in this book, "This is a wild walk along the cenali (ridge) that runs from Tuscany to Parma. The vistas are marvellous--like looking down into a Leonardo Painting."
